National COY winners, UNWIND clench 3rd Place in Regional COY 2023

JA South Africa national winners, UNWIND clench third place in regional COY

    Gauteng, Johannesburg, 11 December 2023

Junior Achievement South Africa Company of the Year Competition, is proud to announce our national winners, Unwind in third place in the regional company of the Year competition. The regional COY held from 6-8 December 2023, in Rwanda, Kigali, saw learners representing sixteen teams across sixteen countries showcase their entrepreneurial skills in the 2023 Breaking Barriers, themed regional competition. The Company of the Year competition in its 13th iteration sees grade 10 -11 learners gain practical skills in running a business, solving problems and Break Barriers. Prior to proceeding to the regional leg of the competition, team Unwind took part in the six months JA Company programme which saw over thirty teams across the country in grades 10 – 11 run their business from the learnings for the last six months.

The 3 day competition brings together student teams (aged 15-19) from countries across Africa to compete for cash and prizes in this contest of business skills, ingenuity and innovation.

The students are judged by professionals from all works of life who take part in the competition as judges, coaches and mentors, all with the intention of elevating the students’ understanding of business and enterprise.

“The 2023 competition theme, Breaking Barriers signifies a focus on overcoming challenges, pushing boundaries, and defying limitations in pursuit of excellence. It encapsulates the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation, where Africa’s budding entrepreneurs strive to break through obstacles and hurdles to achieve success in their business ventures. This is exactly what our local team has done” , says Zodwa Pakade, JASA Chairperson.

Team Unwind received $ 500 towards their business as a prize money from the competition. In second place is Ghana with Zimbabwe winning in first place.

The COY competition creates a platform for our youth to interact in a competitive but safe environment, whilst fostering public speaking, team building and problem-solving skills and collaboratively come up with business ideas that could move our economy forward.

The COY sponsored by Citi Foundation and the Project Management Institute Education Foundation (PMIEF) bank has seen many of our participants throughout the years go on to refine their business ideas and lead their own businesses.
